[to talk to women in video games is a series in which Jonathan Holmes talks to various people who are women on the biggest game news week for any reason.
Grand Theft Auto III
There are millions of "minor" today's children love them
Call of Dutyseries, despite their qualification M. In fact, judging by the reaction to the last TtWaV
teaser, there are enough people out there at the age of 18 who
If the game was rated M.
These are just some of the reasons why I think it is clear that the ESRB has failed. The ESRB has two functions: to determine which games are appropriate for ages and so discourage the group of "bad" age play "bad" games. He did not succeed in anything. The E, T, M, AO system does not properly divide the game in what should be the play groups, not adequately describe the content of the games that are eligible, and also encourages players to "inappropriate" groups that attracted the games are not supposed to play (for obvious reasons). Not everything is the fault of the ESRB, though. Society as a whole has the wrong idea of ??what is bad for children to experience. When it comes to children, for fear of harming the child or potentially as a person "bad" often blinds common sense. Afraid of the people of the inauguration, for example. Hearing people swear they will not hurt children or make them more likely to repeat the vows they hear. If this were the case, then all children on the planet swears constantly, because there is literally no bad words out of the world. Children can listen to whatever they want and swears a lot. The important thing is how children learn to understand the meaning of these words, and so it's okay to use them. The same goes for nudity and violence they see in movies and video games. As the child avoids the appearance of something that will disrupt or trauma, all that remains is to help them learn not to repeat things dangerous or harmful they saw.
Overall I would say that it is the actions that are less violent physically and mentally easier for children to repeat that are most dangerous for children to testify. The fantastic, ultra-violent things almost always comes with serious consequences in the particular context of the event. While this can be very stimulating for a child, or embarrassing, even, is not likely to teach him to be "bad", not the most minor, seemingly "harmless" violence can.
Here is a story of experience to bring this point. When I was a kid (probably between five and seven), I became very angry against my mother, but I do not remember why. He was probably a few Bears. Anyway, I was very upset, but not in a fit of anger. On this occasion, I wanted to express my anger in a more "real" way, but I could not think of a way that shows the depth of my anger, while being relatively harmless.
Tom and Jerry
There is an episode of extremely violent and chat show children the mouse ", where Tom (the cat) intends to prepare a place in the table of his own, as part of their diabolical plan. He gently pull the chair for her, only to be pulled out of under your right as you're about to sit down. As this is a "child" see ", owner of Tom n was not seriously injured. We would not make children feel bad, now what? Instead, the owner just jumped back on his feet and run around in a room with Tom a broom handle, leading Tom to jump into a glass to hide, become a carpet under the feet of his master, or something strange and exciting.
It was perfect. That's exactly what I wanted. From there I developed a plan to repeat the "joke" I learned from Tom. I made my mother a few toasts, to establish its place in the table, gently pulled the chair for her, and stands out in the last minute. To my horror, a chase scene lively and fun between my mother and I did not follow. Instead, my mother and I cried. She cried in pain emotionally and physically, while I was crying in guilt, shame, sadness and empathy for my father betrayed. If he had come more difficult, could have ended in the hospital. I think we remember that one of the lowest points ever in our relationship.
Now keep in mind that at this age, who had seen plenty of action, horror, movies, and sexy. I saw Stripes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Porky
and endless reel gangster movies and episodes of
Twilight Zone
Chiller ). None of them has the same damage to me
Tom and Jerry fact, because inTom and Jerry
there were no serious consequences for the actions of the characters. In other media, saw the sex and violence were possible, but emotionally trying experiences were definitely a bad idea for a guy like me to try again. It was not the caseTom and Jerry
. There was absolutely nothing in the show there to learn not to repeat the behavior I witnessed. In my personal experience, I heard the same kind of things that happen with modern video games. I've heard of kids jumping on turtles and kicked in the street, waiting to retire safe in their shells as they do in the
Mario
games, only to find crushed in a bloody mess on his feet. I have heard that children eating disgusting and very sick to my stomach for what they have learnedCooking Mama
or fire starting because of their young ambitions culinary. Never heard of a child to steal a car or hitting a prostitute because I saw it onGrand Theft Auto
. Never heard of a child to become sexually active only after the experience of the chess world romantic and weaknesses through the lens ofCatalina
andWe dare
In fact, when it comes to corrupt our children, I think video games are probably the least of our problems. This is something that happens in real life probably should worry.
research that MM. Cheryl K. Olson and Lawrence Kutner used for children's book Grand Theft echoed these sentiments. His research has shown that behaviors that are difficult to reproduce or shown to have negative impacts are less likely to be repeated by children. Children playing
Grand Theft Auto
to evacuate after experiencing bullying at school and actually felt less aggressive later. Games with a large amount of blood was more disturbing for children, and therefore, children were less likely to want to recreate the violence witnessed bloody games. If Mario
had a code of blood, which may have a smaller number of dead turtles in our country.
Of course, it is still just a generalization. The key to bringing the matter is that there is no way to guess how
all
children respond to the same content or how the child's parents will help to address the content issue. There is no universal truth when it comes to this issue. It all depends on individuals. All we can do is try to remind people to take responsibility for their actions as parents and as people.
